School art teachers teach students in elementary, middle, or high school artistic techniques, teach with curriculum based on art history and practice, assess student creativity and craftsmanship, and promote art awareness in a school environment. Most teach multidisciplinary art classes, but some, especially at the high school level, teach more specialized classes like painting or sculpture. An art teacher's day typically involves staff meetings, class planning periods, teaching multiple art classes per day, and grading in higher-level art classes.
Skills needed to be a successful art teacher include a strong foundation in various art techniques, ability to effectively develop curriculum and teach, ability to communicate well with students, parents, and colleagues, and classroom organization. Art teachers typically have a Bachelor's in Art Education; a Bachelor's in Education is also acceptable in many cases coupled with many art courses in college. The most popular colleges for Art Education in the US are Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, University of North Texas, and Boston University.
